Almost every evening when arriving back home from work I find myself being delegated a number of activities by the companies I deal with. Just today my insurance company wanted the actual receipts of my destroyed MacBook to be sent over (my laptop was so nicely dropped on the floor by little out of control operations of TSA at JFK), and additionally I needed to respond to a number of documents given to me during the day such as car service, travel and health documents.
The process is always the same. Something needs to be done to receive the promised service from companies (issues with your car, apply for mortgage, managing travel plans, failed product under warranty, insurance covered health matters, you name it) and you are put to work for the company to collect and handle a number of documents. Do you even still have the right documents? Are they original? Where are they? What if I don’t have them? Who should I call?
Have you ever wondered how much energy and time you put into all of these things? Add to that the documents you collect for your family and children and you can easily double the time and effort. I did that for number of years and felt overwhelmed by the amount of energy it requires from me. I felt so frustrated trying to remember where had I placed those documents and when. Because of this I found myself hustling all night long for several evenings per week trying to manage my life. I was scanning docs, sending them by mail, and filing them in what seemed to be (at-the-time) pretty well organized and well thought places. But then I started to wonder whether it was necessary. There must be a better way!
Companies polish up their customer service operations to minimize costs and maximize customer happiness. However, they tend to only look at benefits from their own view or at best that industry’s point of view. But from a single consumer’s point of view, we are far from being in the sweet spot. You are still expected to take action regarding documents and companies often fail to see what would optimizes your life. After all, I do deal with a number of different companies. You are expected and sometimes required by law to safe-keep those documents up to ten years in case of an emergency or audit of some sort. Therefore, it would be nice to have some sort of “standard” for how my documents are provided to me taking into account that I receive documents from many companies. In other words, this process should build around me, not around every individual company. This complication is something we will look back in the future and shake our heads saying: “I can’t believe we used to do that”.
Well, I don’t know about you, but after a day’s work is done I’d rather kick back and digest all the cool things we have accomplished during the day or even occasionally enjoy a football game.
